From the moment of touchdown at the airstrip in Illiamna, the level of service stood out. Even a cold beer handed to you while introductions were made and your luggage loaded by the staff! The facilities were immaculate and comfortable with a lake view that instantly dissolved any lingering stress you may have had left from the outside world. Despite the ‘endless’ days in Alaska, the in-person wake-up service meant not missing a moment of what was to offer. The fishing could not have been better. Having never fly fished, the guides were able to spend time with me for one-on-one instruction whenever needed and soon found myself reeling in Sockeye at the Gorge in no time at all. Absolutely incredible. As if the fishing weren’t enough, getting to fly on the floatplanes was simply breathtaking. We got to see so much wilderness including a bonus fly round the valley of 1000 smokes. My head still can’t absorb all of what it was fed.
Finally, the meals were spectacular. Paired with great wine, the dining room really found a beautiful way to turn a group we hadn’t known into a family replete with bawdy tales of the day’s adventures.
