Sockeye salmon — also called red salmon or blueback salmon in the United States. The Sockeye salmon enter the Iliamna lake drainage by the millions in late June and early July. For the first few weeks that they are in fresh water, they are considered to be the hardest fighting salmon pound for pound. Sockeye Salmon average 6 to 10 pounds with a 15-pound maximum. Catching these on a fly rod starts the fight of a lifetime, our private access to the Newhalen Gorge will put you waist deep in Sockeye.
