Fly Fishing for Alaska’s Rainbow Trout

Located along the shores of Lake Iliamna, the largest lake in Alaska, Rainbow King Lodge gives you the opportunity for Alaska trout fishing in a one-of-a-kind getaway. Our expertly guided sport fishing excursions cover a broad area of private Alaskan wilderness where you can fish for trout without distractions. Whether you’re fishing for trout from the shore of a lake or among the surrounding tundra, mountains, and rivers, there will be nothing separating you from an idyllic rainbow trout fishing experience.

There’s no bad time to be angling for trout at Rainbow King Lodge, as the big trophy rainbow trout that give the resort its name are available all season. The biggest rainbows come out of the lake from mid-August through September. Alaska’s biggest rainbow trout, fish that can eclipse an incredible 30 inches in length, are most often linked to the state’s great salmon rivers. Because many of the most productive salmon rivers are those fed by great lakes, anglers in search of the world’s largest, most abundant rainbow trout will find the lake-and-river systems of the Bristol Bay region very productive. Here, sockeye salmon return each summer by the millions to rivers draining into Lake Iliamna. The lake provides critical rearing habitat for young sockeye and important wintering water for rainbow trout.

The relationship between salmon and trout works like this: When the salmon return from the Pacific by the millions each summer to spawn, the rainbows are waiting. Like wolves following a caribou herd, trout shadow the salmon schools upstream to spawning gravel where they wait to feed on freshly dropped eggs. The salmon eggs are protein-rich and available in abundance throughout the summer and into the fall. And once the salmon die after spawning, their carcasses provide more protein-rich food for meat-hungry trout.

However, when you’re at Rainbow King Lodge during the fishing season, you’ll always have a legitimate shot at hauling in one of these incredible specimens.
